Happy St. Patrick’s Day! On this religious and cultural holiday commemorating St. Patrick and celebrating the rich Irish heritage, the following quote, widely attributed to Irish poet and writer W.B. Yeats, comes to mind: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” The quote compares the filling of a pail, which represents a passive, rote approach to learning, where information is simply poured into a student’s mind, to the lighting of a fire, which represents an active, dynamic approach to learning, where students are encouraged to think critically, question, and explore. It suggests that education should aim to inspire curiosity and ignite a lifelong passion for learning, rather than just conveying information. (fb)
