The inception of the museum was sparked during a conversation in 1978 among four polo enthusiasts: George C. Sherman Jr., Philip L. B. Iglehart, Leverett S. Miller, and H. Jeremy Chisholm. These founders were committed to the preservation of polo artifacts and the sport's historical narrative. Their vision materialized when a temporary home was opened at the Kentucky Horse Park in 1988, gradually building support and gathering an extensive collection of polo-related items.

In 1997, the museum was relocated to its current expansive site in Lake Worth, Florida, which is situated on a ten-acre estate in the heart of the polo community. This location has become essential for celebrating the sport, especially during the high-goal polo season, which runs from January to April.

The mission of the National Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame is to acquire, preserve, exhibit, and interpret collections, while honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the sport.
