Free & Accepted Masons of New York
The Free & Accepted Masons of New York, officially the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York, is a nonprofit organization that serves as the coordinating body for many Masonic activities throughout New York State.
History
The first documented presence of Freemasonry in the colony of New York dates back to the mid-1730s, with Daniel Coxe Jr. being appointed as Provincial Grand Master by the Duke of Norfolk, the Grand Master of the Premier Grand Lodge of England[1][3]. However, due to a lack of records, it is unclear if Coxe exercised any real authority in Masonic endeavors.
The Grand Lodge of New York was officially founded in 1782, although it began operating under a warrant issued in 1781 by the "Athol" or Antient Grand Lodge of England[2]. The organization declared its independence on June 6, 1787, assuming the title "Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York"[2].
Structure and Activities
The Grand Lodge oversees more than 800 Masonic Lodges across New York State and nine lodges in Lebanon[1]. Its various committees manage key institutions such as the Masonic Home in Utica, the Livingston Masonic Library, and several charitable events[1]. The organization supports numerous philanthropic endeavors and has played a significant role in New York's civic and cultural life for centuries[2].
Notable Contributions
New York Masons have been involved in significant historical events. For example, the Bible used in the swearing-in ceremony of George Washington is owned by St. Johnβs Lodge No. 1 and is still used today for swearing in the Grand Master and, by request, the President of the United States[2].
Relationship with Other Organizations
Since 2001, the Grand Lodge of New York has had mutual recognition with the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New York[1]. This recognition underscores the efforts of Masonic organizations to foster unity and cooperation among different Masonic traditions.
Prominent Figures
The Grand Lodge has been led by several influential figures, including past Grand Masters such as Robert R. Livingston and Steven Adam Rubin[1][2]. Livingston played a significant role in early American history, serving as Grand Master for sixteen years and participating in George Washington's inauguration ceremony[2].
Masonic Youth and Community Engagement
The Grand Lodge supports Masonic youth groups and has a long history of community engagement. This includes founding organizations like the Organization of Triangles, Inc., in 1925[1].
Legacy
Throughout its history, the Free & Accepted Masons of New York have contributed to the welfare of both Masons and the broader community in the state and beyond[2]. Their philanthropic efforts continue to impact various aspects of society, from healthcare to education.
