Underground Railroad Society of Cass County
Overview
The Underground Railroad Society of Cass County (URSCC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the Underground Railroad in Cass County, Michigan. Founded in the late 2000s by a group of local residents, historians, and community activists, the society focuses on researching and educating about the Underground Railroad's legacy in the area.
History and Mission
Cass County played a significant role in the Underground Railroad as a crucial stop along the route from Indiana to Canada. The URSCC works to honor this legacy by maintaining historic sites, organizing educational programs, and participating in community events. Their mission is to research and educate about the Underground Railroad in Cass County and to restore several key buildings related to this history. These include the Bonine House, the Bonine Carriage House, the Stephen Bogue House, and Brownsville School #1.
Activities and Events
The society offers a self-guided driving tour of up to 20 sites significant to Underground Railroad activities in Cass County. Annual events include the Underground Railroad Days, the UGRR Wax Museum, and Christmas at the Bonine House. URSCC members actively present to groups throughout the region, promoting awareness and appreciation of this historical era.

- Bonine House: Built by James E. Bonine, this site served as a station on the Underground Railroad. The house and its carriage house are being restored to serve as educational and community centers.
- Stephen Bogue House: Once home to Quaker stationmasters Stephen and Hannah East Bogue, this site is important for its role in helping freedom seekers and its involvement in the Kentucky Raid of 1847.
- Brownsville School #1: Acquired by URSCC, this early integrated school is undergoing restoration.
Recognition
In 2024, the Underground Railroad Society of Cass County received an award from the Michigan Historical Society for its contributions as a local society.
Leadership and Governance
The society is governed by a board of directors, which includes representatives from various parts of Cass County. The leadership is committed to preserving and sharing the story of the Underground Railroad in the region.
Significance
The URSCC highlights Cass County's unique history as a "hotbed of abolitionism," where Quakers, free blacks, and other abolitionists worked together to aid freedom seekers. The society's work enhances understanding of this period and promotes social justice awareness through historical education.
