This Mental Health Awareness Month, we are honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Nakita Mortimer — a CIR/SEIU member, anesthesiology resident at Montefiore, and union organizer who died by suicide in 2023. Dr. Mortimer fought for better conditions for residents and spoke out about the mental health crisis in medicine. Her story, featured in the Wall Street Journal, is a heartbreaking reminder that no one is immune — and that silence, stigma, and unsafe working conditions can be deadly. She was a leader, a friend, a sister, and a light to so many. Her loss is a call to action.
