Overview

Movement Research, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the field of dance through experimental movement research and education. Founded in 1978 as "The School for Movement Research & Construction," it has evolved into one of the world's leading laboratories for dance and movement-based forms.

History

Movement Research was founded by a collective of artists with a vision to create a space for workshops exploring new movement techniques. In April 1979, the organization held its first benefit performance, featuring prominent figures in dance such as Trisha Brown and David Gordon. By 1980, it incorporated as a not-for-profit organization under the name "Movement Research, Inc." The first Board of Directors comprised entirely of artists, reflecting the organization's commitment to artistic innovation and community.

Initiatives

Movement Research offers an array of programs designed to foster creativity and dialogue within the dance community. Key initiatives include:

• Weekly Dance Practice: A regular gathering at Judson Memorial Church.
• Open Performance: An open-discussion forum moderated by a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence, providing a platform for performance and feedback.
• Studies Project: A curated series of panels and performances exploring diverse issues at the intersection of dance and social politics.
• Movement Research Festival: A biennial festival examining contemporary dance and its cultural contexts.
• Artist-in-Residence Programs: Including a local program and MRX, a traveling residency initiative.

Publications

Movement Research operates in multiple locations, with a central hub at the 122 Community Center. The organization continues to evolve, offering a permanent home for experimental dancers and supporting a wide range of artistic projects.

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, contributions are the primary source of revenue. Movement Research relies heavily on contributions to support its extensive programs and services.
