Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Virginia
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Virginia, also known as the Grand Lodge of Virginia, is a nonprofit organization that serves as the governing body for Freemasonry in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is one of the oldest and most prominent Masonic Grand Lodges in the United States.
History
The Grand Lodge of Virginia was formally constituted on October 30, 1778, following a series of conventions held in Williamsburg earlier that year. These conventions aimed to centralize Masonic authority within Virginia, as local lodges were chartered by various Grand Lodges from England, Scotland, Ireland, and Pennsylvania. John Blair, Jr., a Past Master of Williamsburg Lodge, was elected as the first Grand Master of Masons in Virginia[1][3].
Formation and Membership
The Grand Lodge was created by the union of eight chartered lodges: Norfolk, Port Royal, Blandford, Fredericksburg, Saint Tammany, Williamsburg, Botetourt, and Cabin Point. This formation marked a significant milestone in American Freemasonry, establishing the Grand Lodge of Virginia as the first continuous, independent Masonic Grand Lodge in the United States[3][4].
Leadership and Influence
Over its long history, the Grand Lodge of Virginia has played a pivotal role in Masonic leadership within the state and nationally. George Washington was invited to become the first Grand Master but declined due to his involvement in the American Revolution and not having held the position of Master or Warden in a lodge[4]. Many notable historical figures have been affiliated with this Grand Lodge, including several who have served as Grand Masters.
Structure and Operations
Today, the Grand Lodge of Virginia oversees more than 276 local Masonic lodges across the state and has a membership of approximately 25,000 Freemasons[4]. While historically based in Williamsburg, its headquarters moved to Richmond in 1784, where it remains today. The organization is involved in various community service activities, charitable efforts, and the promotion of Masonic principles.
Legacy and Impact
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Virginia continue to be a cornerstone of Freemasonry in the United States, contributing to the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Commonwealth. The Grand Lodge's enduring presence reflects the strong tradition of Freemasonry in Virginia, which dates back to the colonial era.
