World Transhumanist Association, Inc.
Overview
The World Transhumanist Association, Inc. is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization known for promoting the ethical use of emerging technologies to enhance human capacities. It is currently operating under the name Humanity+ following a rebranding effort in 2008.
History
Founded in 1998 by philosophers Nick Bostrom and David Pearce, the organization initially aimed to establish transhumanism as a legitimate area of scientific study and public policy discussion. The founders sought to provide a framework different from other transhumanist groups such as the Extropy Institute, focusing on social implications and equitable access to enhancement technologies.
In 2002, James Hughes was elected secretary and formalized the organization's international network. By this time, the World Transhumanist Association had become a leading international voice for transhumanism, particularly after the Extropy Institute ceased operations in 2006.
Objectives and Activities
The primary objectives of the World Transhumanist Association, now known as Humanity+, include:
- Promoting Public Awareness and Discussion: Encouraging dialogue about emerging technologies and their potential impact on human life.
- Advocacy for Human Enhancement Rights: Supporting policies that ensure equal access to technologies that enhance human capabilities, such as longevity therapies and cognitive enhancements.
- Addressing Ethical Concerns: Examining the ethical implications of advanced technologies and proposing solutions for their safe and equitable use.
Historically, the organization has hosted conferences (TransVision series) and published scholarly journals, including Journal of Transhumanism, later renamed Journal of Evolution and Technology. It also launched a web magazine called h+ Magazine and established a publishing arm known as Humanity+ Press.
Rebranding to Humanity+
In 2008, the organization underwent a rebranding to Humanity+. This change aimed to convey a more inclusive and humane image, reflecting broader societal concerns and aspirations in the use of technology to improve human life.
Legacy and Impact
As a leading organization in the transhumanist movement, Humanity+ continues to advocate for life extension, ethical technology use, and equal access to human enhancement technologies. Its efforts have contributed significantly to the global discussion on the future of human existence and the integration of technology into human society.
