Philadelphia Independent Film and Video Association (PIFVA)

Overview

The Philadelphia Independent Film and Video Association (PIFVA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and enriching the independent media arts community in the Philadelphia region. Established in 1979 by independent filmmakers, PIFVA aims to connect, support, sustain, and showcase local media makers working across various genres and styles.

Mission and Programs

PIFVA's mission is rooted in promoting independent, non-commercial, artistically provocative, diverse, and community-based film and video productions. The organization offers several programs and services to achieve this mission, including:

  • Cinema Speakeasy: A series of filmmaker screenings and dialogue events designed to foster discussion and collaboration among media makers.
  • Speed-Crewing Events: These networking events bring together filmmakers, writers, and producers to facilitate collaborations and projects.
  • The Finishing Fund Program: This program provides post-production funding for film and video projects nearing completion. Grants are awarded up to $1,500 and are paid directly to service providers, making it the only such funding program in the region.
  • Fiscal Sponsorships: PIFVA offers fiscal sponsorship to help projects secure grant and foundation funding, enabling them to achieve their goals more effectively.
  • Workshops and Collaborations: The organization hosts workshops on various filmmaking topics and collaborates with other entities to screen films and conduct educational classes.
  • Staff and Board Referrals, Consultations, and Mentoring: PIFVA provides consultations and mentoring services to support media makers in their professional development.

History

Initially operating as a program at International House from its founding in 1979, PIFVA evolved into a vital resource for local media makers. In 1998, it was no longer hosted by International House, prompting a community advisory council to develop strategies for its future. In 2002, PIFVA achieved 501(c)(3) status, allowing it to operate independently under the guidance of a Board of Directors, volunteers, and a paid coordinator.

Financials and Funding

PIFVA is supported by various funding sources, including the Fels Fund, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the Wyncote Foundation, along with individual supporters. Despite early financial challenges, the organization has grown to have assets exceeding $5,000 and annual revenues surpassing $50,000[5].

Operations and Impact

PIFVA operates with an active Board of Directors and a paid coordinator, leveraging the Scribe Video Center as a hub for its activities. Members can utilize facilities for screenings, meetings, interviews, and filming, facilitating a productive environment for media makers. The organization's commitment to fostering an inclusive and vibrant community of independent filmmakers continues to shape the media landscape in Philadelphia.
