Exploring the Metropolis, Inc.
Overview

Exploring the Metropolis, Inc. (EtM), a U.S. nonprofit organization, played a vital role in supporting the performing artists' community in New York City. Founded in 1982 by Eugenie C. Cowan, EtM focused on addressing the need for affordable and suitable space for performing artists to create, rehearse, and perform.

Mission and Impact

The organization's mission was centered around enhancing the use of underutilized spaces to benefit both the arts and real estate sectors. Through various programs and initiatives, EtM provided substantial support to the performing arts community:

  • Workspaces and Residencies: EtM offered numerous residency programs, notably the EtM Choreographer + Composer Residencies and the EtM Con Edison Composer Residencies. These programs provided free workspace and financial support to over 100 composers and choreographers, resulting in the creation of new works and substantial rehearsal time for artists.

  • Studies and Consulting: EtM conducted seminal studies and offered consulting services on shared space utilization, adaptive reuse strategies, and layout optimization. One notable study was the 2004 Report on the Feasibility of an Orchestra-based Rehearsal Center in Manhattan, which laid the groundwork for the DiMenna Center for Classical Music.

  • Public Programs: EtM facilitated more than 90 free public programs for New York audiences, enriching the cultural landscape.

Programs and Activities
  1. EtM Choreographer + Composer Residencies: Started in 2015, this program supported choreographer/composer teams with free workspace and financial backing over three months to develop new works.

  2. EtM Con Edison Composer Residencies: Established in 2009, this program offered long-term studio space to composers at cultural facilities like Flushing Town Hall.

  3. NYC Performing Arts Spaces Database: EtM developed a groundbreaking online database providing information on available performing arts spaces in NYC.

Legacy and Closure

After 38 years of dedicated service, Exploring the Metropolis closed its operations in June 2020. However, EtM's legacy continues through Redtail Artist Residencies, which continues one of its key programs at the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning.
