Martin Puryear’s much-loved "Pavilion in the Trees" is closed to the public until further notice due to structural safety concerns, following a recent engineering assessment. You can still go see it—you just can’t walk on or under it. The work was commissioned by the Association for Public Art and installed in 1993 near the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park. We collaborate with Fairmount Park Conservancy's conservation team to carry out annual maintenance and repairs, but as the structure ages, more significant interventions may be needed. We are working with engineers and the Conservancy to determine what needs to be done in order to stabilize the structure and reopen it to the public. This brings us back to a question we recently asked: Can it last? How “permanent” can a wooden structure exposed to the elements be? Full story: https://bit.ly/can-it-last-pavilion-in-the-trees (fb)

🌸 Heading to this weekend’s Cherry Blossom Festival at the Horticulture Center? Swing by our table in the greenhouse for public art trivia and prizes! Check out Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival for more info. TRIVIA: What does the inscription say on top of the “Sundial” by Alexander Stirling Calder? Drop the right answer in the comments and we’ll write you a haiku in your honor. The sundial is arguably the star of the festival with those cherry blossoms all around. We gifted this sculpture to the City for Fairmount Park 120 years ago through a then-anonymous donor, and it’s stood on the Horticulture Center grounds ever since 👵 More at associationforpublicart.org/sundial (fb)
