Iota Phi Lambda Sorority Inc. (ΙΦΛ) is a national African American business sorority. Founded on June 1, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, by Lola Mercedes Parker, it holds the distinction of being the first Greek-lettered business sorority established by African American women.

History

The establishment of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority Inc. was motivated by the need to support African American women who faced discrimination based on both race and gender, particularly during the Great Depression. The sorority was designed to provide a platform for women in business, promoting career advancement and professional development. Its founding members included Ethel T. Edwards, Mildred G. Hardin, Ophelia Harrison, Lola M. Parker, Harriet M. Robinson, Burdette Trigg, and Marjorie Tyndall. Initially focused on business vocations, the sorority has expanded to encompass other professions while maintaining its core emphasis on business.

Purpose and Mission

The sorority aims to unite qualified business and professional women in a sisterhood, promote interest in business education among young women, encourage leadership development, and engage in civic and social service activities. Its mission is to make significant contributions to society by promoting excellence in various endeavors and developing leadership among business and professional women.

Symbols and Motto

Iota Phi Lambda's motto is "Upward and Onward in Efficient Service." The sorority's colors are emerald green and white, its flower is the white rose with green fern, and its mascot is the turtle. The publication of the sorority is the Iota Journal.

Activities and Philanthropy

Iota Phi Lambda engages in various programs, including activities during American Education Weeks, Black History Month, and Business Month. The sorority presents the Lola M. Parker Award for the outstanding woman of the year and the Mahala S. Evans Award for the outstanding member of the year. It supports national philanthropies such as Toys U Can't Return and Iota Mothers Assistance. Chapters organize tutoring at local schools and conduct career exploration programs. The sorority also offers annual scholarships at the chapter, regional, and national levels to support women in pursuing careers in business, engineering, or science.

Chapters and Membership

Iota Phi Lambda has established more than 100 chapters across 85 cities in the United States. As of 2024, it operates with 64 active chapters and over 1,300 active members, with more than 5,000 lifetime members. The sorority is a member of the Coalition of Black Business Sororities.
