Laborers' International Union of North America
Overview
The Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), often referred to as the Laborers' Union, is a prominent construction industry labor union in North America, representing over 500,000 members across various sectors. Established in 1903, the union has played a significant role in advocating for labor rights, safety, and political engagement amongst its members.
History
LIUNA was founded on April 13, 1903, originally named the International Carriers and Building Laborers' Union. The formation aimed to unite construction workers and laborers from local unions throughout the United States, responding to calls from the American Federation of Labor (AFL) for greater organization among construction workers. The union was renamed in 1965 to reflect its international scope, as it began to include members from Canada.
Throughout its history, LIUNA has been involved in pivotal social and political issues. The union was present at the White House in 1962 to pledge not to discriminate in hiring practices and later supported President Johnson's "war on poverty." Members also participated in the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom led by Martin Luther King Jr.
Structure
LIUNA operates through a network of 500 local unions and nine regional offices across North America, including a significant presence in Canada. The international headquarters is located in Washington, D.C. The union's governance is managed through its constitution and is reviewed and amended during its International Union General Convention, held every five years.
Political Activities
LIUNA is actively involved in political advocacy, lobbying for infrastructure spending and labor-friendly policies. The union has historically supported Democratic candidates and initiatives, contributing significant resources to political action committees. Notably, it has taken stances on issues such as immigration policy, healthcare reform, and workers' rights, including opposition to "right to work" legislation that would weaken union bargaining power.
Training and Safety Initiatives
A key focus of LIUNA has been the training and safety of its members. The organization has developed training programs aimed at enhancing safety standards in construction and has established various health and safety funds to support its members. Initiatives like the New England Laborers' Training Academy and the Laborers' Health and Safety Fund of North America have been instrumental in promoting safer working conditions and providing essential skills training.
Current Leadership
As of 2023, the General President of LIUNA is Brent Booker, who leads the organization in its ongoing mission to enhance the welfare of its members through collective bargaining and political engagement.
Conclusion
LIUNA stands as one of the most influential labor unions in the construction industry, advocating for workers' rights, safety, and political representation. With a rich history and a commitment to advancing the interests of its diverse membership, LIUNA continues to play a critical role in shaping labor policies and standards in North America.
