Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, also known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a nonprofit fraternal organization that oversees Freemasonry in the state of Texas. As one of the largest governing bodies for Freemasonry in Texas, it plays a significant role in the state's Masonic community.

History

The history of Freemasonry in Texas dates back to the early 19th century. In 1828, Stephen F. Austin convened a meeting of Masons to petition for a charter from the York Grand Lodge of Mexico, though this effort was ultimately unsuccessful due to political tensions[1]. However, the first successful Masonic lodge in Texas was established in 1835. Six Master Masons, including Anson Jones, met under an oak tree near the town of Brazoria and petitioned the Grand Lodge of Louisiana for a dispensation to form a lodge. This led to the creation of Holland Lodge No. 36, later known as Holland Lodge No. 1, with Anson Jones as its first Worshipful Master[2][3].

Expansion and Development

Following the establishment of Holland Lodge, two more lodges were formed in Texas with dispensations from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana: Milam Lodge No. 40 in Nacogdoches and McFarland Lodge No. 41 in San Augustine. These three lodges came together in 1837 to establish the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas, with Anson Jones elected as the first Grand Master[2][3]. After Texas became a state in 1845, the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas transitioned into the Grand Lodge of Texas.

Freemasonry in Texas Today

Today, the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas continue to uphold the traditions of Freemasonry, focusing on personal development and community service. The organization supports various charitable initiatives, including programs for youth education, scholarships, and healthcare support through affiliations with the Scottish Rite and Shrine[2][4].

Mission and Activities

As a fraternal organization, the Masons aim to "take good men and make them better" by fostering brotherhood and personal improvement through its three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason[3][4]. Masonic activities often involve community service projects, and its members play an active role in supporting local communities across Texas.

Conclusion

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas have been an integral part of the state's history and society, contributing to both the Texas Revolution and ongoing community development. The organization remains committed to its core values of brotherhood and service, continuing the legacy of Freemasonry in Texas.
