Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Department of Pennsylvania

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) Department of Pennsylvania is part of one of the largest and most impactful veteran organizations in the United States. The VFW as a whole has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century, with its roots in organizations formed by veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection.

History

The American Veterans of the Philippine and China Wars was founded in Philadelphia in 1902 by Captain Robert S. Hansbury. This group, along with others in Pennsylvania, including the Philippine War Veterans in Pittsburgh and Altoona, merged into the American Veterans of Foreign Service in 1903. By 1905, this group combined with the Ohio AVFS, and in 1913, it merged with the Army of the Philippines to form the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. The name was formally adopted at an encampment in Pittsburgh in 1914.

Contributions and Activities

The VFW plays a crucial role in supporting veterans and their families. It advocates for veterans' rights, provides scholarships for education, and assists in community service projects. The organization is also known for its "Buddy Poppy" program, which symbolizes remembrance of the sacrifices made during World War I and helps raise funds for veterans' welfare.

During World War II, the VFW was instrumental in passing the GI Bill, which significantly aided veterans in their transition back to civilian life. The VFW has continued to support subsequent GI Bills, including the 21st Century GI Bill, ensuring ongoing assistance for modern veterans.

In addition to its advocacy work, the VFW engages in various community activities. It supports disaster relief efforts, provides aid to veterans during economic downturns, and facilitates citizenship programs. The VFW also conducts national competitions like the "Voice of Democracy" and "Patriot’s Pen" to promote patriotism among youth.

Pennsylvania's Role

Pennsylvania holds a significant position within the VFW, boasting the largest number of members and posts in the country as of 2014. With over 90,000 members and 400 local posts, Pennsylvania has been pivotal in supporting and celebrating the VFW's mission. The state's rich history with the organization is highlighted by key events, such as the 1941 and 1954 National Encampments held in Pennsylvania, which drew large crowds and featured competitions and marches.

The VFW Department of Pennsylvania continues to embody the organization's core values of honoring veterans while supporting living veterans and their families. Through its extensive network and wide range of activities, the VFW remains a vital part of Pennsylvania's community, upholding its tradition of service and advocacy.
