Lionsgate Academy
The mission of Lionsgate Academy is to foster self determination by providing a transition-focused, personalized learning program for all students, specializing in educating students with autism spectrum disorders.
Lionsgate Academy
Lionsgate Academy is a public charter school in the United States designated as a 501(c)(3) educational organization, specifically serving students with Asperger's syndrome and those on the autism spectrum. The academy focuses on providing a comprehensive education for students in grades 7 through 12.
History
Lionsgate Academy was founded by Bernadette Groh R.N., M.S., P.H.N., and Tamara Phillips M.A. They were inspired to create the school after consulting with experts in autism education and realizing the need for better public education for teenagers with autism. The name "Lionsgate" reflects the founders' personal connection to the Hebrew meaning of the name Ari (meaning courage or lion), as both founders have children with autism named Ari. The school began operations on September 2, 2008, with an initial enrollment of 70 students.
Mission and Programs
The mission of Lionsgate Academy is to provide a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters academic success, social skills, and transition readiness for students with autism. The academy offers core academic classes alongside specialized services such as social skills training, occupational therapy, speech-language skills, and transition skills. The goal is for graduates to pursue further education or gainful employment, live independently, and cultivate meaningful relationships.
Leadership and Operations
As of recent reports, the executive director of Lionsgate Academy is Diane Halpin, who has extensive experience in education and autism support services. The academy has grown significantly since its inception, expanding to include additional locations and programs.
Financial Operations
Lionsgate Academy primarily generates revenue through program services. The organization's financial structure includes executive compensation and salaries for staff members, with a focus on maintaining a robust educational environment.
Associated Foundation
Lionsgate Academy is supported by the Lionsgate Foundation, a separate nonprofit organization established in 2011. The foundation works to fund innovative projects and emerging needs within Lionsgate Academy and beyond, aiming to expand opportunities, dissolve barriers, and increase belonging for students with autism and their families. The foundation is 100% volunteer-driven and organizes various fundraising events.
Impact and Recognition
Lionsgate Academy has been recognized for its groundbreaking approach to autism education, particularly in its focus on academic success alongside specialized support services. The school's growth and success have been supported by partnerships with organizations like Propel Nonprofits, which have helped stabilize funding during periods of state budget shifts.
