Springfield Cemetery
On this day in history: May 22, 1863 - the War Department established the Bureau of Colored Troops, officially forming African American regiments under the name United States Colored Troops (USCT). At Ferncliff, we honor the legacy and sacrifice of these brave soldiers with a monument at our Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) mound. This tribute stands in remembrance of the 139 USCT veterans laid to rest here, who served with courage during the Civil War.
