In July 1850, the New-York Tribune’s first female foreign correspondent, Margaret Fuller, sailed from revolution-torn Italy to the United States a changed woman. Accompanying Fuller on the ship Elizabeth were her romantic partner Giovanni Ossoli, a minor nobleman and former soldier in Rome’s Civic Guard; their child, Angelo; and a draft of Fuller’s manuscript on the rise and fall of the Roman Republic, which she believed to be her greatest work. The young family and Fuller’s magnum opus would never reach their destination.

Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, 126 years ago, on July 21, 1899. In the spring of 1918, Hemingway enlisted with the Red Cross Ambulance Corps, went to New York for two weeks of training, and arrived in Milan in early June. The newest group of American volunteers were distributed along the Piave front: Hemingway ended up in the war-ravaged village of Fossalta, while two new friends, William Horne and Warren Pease, set up camp a few miles away on the upper floor of a building that housed silkworms.
