“Whether they are being strong during a deployment or helping with the care of an injured Veteran, their ability to understand the emotions of those around them is always surprising.” - Ashley L., mother, and Veteran Caregiver. Later this year, The Independence Fund will host several families for a retreat through the Caregiver and Family program. Family retreats offer Caregivers and Veterans a break from responsibilities and time to bond as a family. For children, it’s also a time to meet peers who understand them and don’t view their family as different. This time for fun and connection lasts for years after the retreat is over. Caregivers and families come from all over the country and stay in touch with each other and with The Independence Fund long after. This month is Month of the Military Child and serves as a reminder that when a hero returns from battle wounded, the whole family adjusts and makes sacrifices. Their sacrifice shows resilience and support, but it does not come easily. Like anyone, military children need access to a community that understands them. Military children may take on more responsibilities than their peers. They often babysit siblings during doctor’s appointments and frequent trips to VA medical centers. They also help Caregivers by providing support at home. The Independence Fund’s Caregiver and Family program allows military children and their families to engage in enriching retreats and meet friends just like themselves. You can help The Independence Fund build supportive communities for military children and families by supporting the Caregiver and Family program. Today is Gold Star Spouses Day, an important time to recognize and acknowledge the strength and resilience of those who've lost their beloved heroes in service to our nation. Their love endures, their courage inspires, and their sacrifice should never be forgotten. The Independence Fund recognizes you and honors the memory of your loved ones. Reach out to the Gold Star spouses in your life and offer your support. No one needs to take on the burden of grief alone. #GoldStarSpousesDay #HonorTheirSacrifice #TheIndependenceFund #NeverForgotten (fb)
