A Whisper from the Water: The Mount Holly Witch Weighing (Imagine a chill wind rustling through unseen leaves, a subtle flicker of a lantern…) “Good evening, fellow travelers through time. Tonight, as the shadows lengthen and the air grows crisp, we invite you to step back with us, to a chilling chapter in our local lore. ” Nearly 300 years ago, close to this very day, the quiet colonial landscape of Burlington County was far from peaceful.

⚓ 250 Years Ago: The Continental Navy Was Born. On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the first American naval force — the beginning of what would become the United States Navy. Years later, one of its greatest early captains, Commodore Thomas Truxtun, would retire right here in Moorestown, after commanding the USS Constellation in the Quasi-War with France and earning America’s first major naval victories.
