John Robert Walker Memorial Oakland First Aid Squad Inc

Overview

The John Robert Walker Memorial Oakland First Aid Squad Inc is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing emergency medical services to the residents and visitors of Oakland, New Jersey, and its surrounding areas. Established in 1954, this all-volunteer organization offers its services free of charge, relying entirely on donations for operations.

Founding History

The squad was founded by John and Vivian Walker in memory of their son, John Robert Walker, who passed away at the age of nine after battling leukemia. His need for frequent medical transport to New York City hospitals highlighted the lack of local emergency services in Oakland at the time. This led the Walkers to establish the first aid squad, which has since grown into a vital part of the local community.

Operations and Services

Today, the John Robert Walker Memorial Oakland First Aid Squad provides 24/7 emergency medical services to hundreds of individuals annually. The squad operates within a multi-agency response system, ensuring coordination and efficiency in emergency situations. Members come from diverse backgrounds, including electricians, mechanics, nurses, and engineers, all united by their role as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).

Community Engagement and Training

The organization is always recruiting new members, offering roles for individuals above the age of 16. Training is provided for various positions, including observers, cadets, EMTs, and certified drivers. The squad emphasizes continuous education and specialization for its members, ensuring they stay updated on the latest medical technologies and practices.

Funding and Donations

As a nonprofit organization, the John Robert Walker Memorial Oakland First Aid Squad relies on donations to maintain its operations. Contributions help replace medical supplies, maintain vehicles, fund new equipment purchases, and support member education and facility maintenance. The organization aims to expand its community presence through educational initiatives and improve its emergency response capabilities.

Legacy and Impact

The John Robert Walker Memorial Oakland First Aid Squad continues to honor the legacy of John Robert Walker by providing essential services to those in need. It is recognized for its dedication to serving the local community with free and comprehensive emergency care.
