DeMolay International

Overview

DeMolay International is a youth leadership organization with Masonic origins, primarily aimed at young men between the ages of 12 and 21. The organization is named after Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar. It focuses on developing leadership skills, teamwork, and networking among its members.

Founding and History

DeMolay International was founded on March 24, 1919, by Frank Sherman Land in Kansas City, Missouri. Initially, the organization started with nine members. The emblem of DeMolay features a crown with ten rubies, each representing one of the original nine members plus the founder. The rubies were originally pearls, symbolizing the founding members, and were changed to rubies as each member passed away.

Purpose and Programs

DeMolay International is dedicated to preparing young men to lead successful, happy, and productive lives by promoting personal development, civic awareness, and community service. While DeMolay primarily focuses on young men, it has programs that allow for the participation of young women as chapter "sweethearts" or "princesses."

Structure and Governance

The International Supreme Council is the governing body of DeMolay International, consisting of adult leaders from around the world. This council includes positions such as the Grand Master, Grand Senior Councilor, Grand Junior Councilor, Grand Secretary, and Grand Treasurer. Additionally, DeMolay has a Senate-style body known as the DeMolay Congress, where delegates from each jurisdiction meet annually to discuss and vote on legislative issues.

Financial Status

DeMolay International is a 501(c)(3) organization, classified as a tax-exempt nonprofit under the IRS. Its financial operations are supported by contributions, program services, and investment income. The organization's total assets have fluctuated over the years, reflecting its active engagement in various programs and services.

Relationship with the DeMolay Foundation

DeMolay International works closely with the DeMolay Foundation, which was established in 1948 by Frank S. Land. The DeMolay Foundation acts as a financial support system for DeMolay International, managing assets and funding key programs such as the Service and Leadership Center. Despite their close collaboration, they are separate entities with distinct leadership and governance structures.

Membership and Reach

As of recent years, DeMolay International has approximately 12,000 active members worldwide. The organization has chapters across various continents, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and several countries in Europe and South America. While primarily for young men, DeMolay also supports Masonic-related organizations for young women, such as the Rainbow Girls and Job's Daughters.
