Old Central Cultural Center, 2627 Avenue M, Galveston, TX A FEW KNOWN FACTS OFBLACK HISTORY IN GALVESTON TEXAS 1840 Oldest Black Baptist Church in the State of Texas was founded known as the Colored Baptist Church but today stands as the Avenue L Missionary Baptist Church. 1885 Texas First African American High School Central High School was organized thanks to the influence of the Honorable Norris Wright Cuney an outstanding African American leader. 1886 Reedy Chapel was and remains the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Texas. 19081915 John Arthur Jack Johnson nicknamed the Galveston Giant was an American boxer whoat the height of the Jim Crow erabecame the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion.
