Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Virginia
The Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Virginia, commonly referred to as the Grand Lodge of Virginia, is a nonprofit organization and the oldest, continuous, independent Masonic Grand Lodge in the United States. It oversees the organization and activities of Freemasonry across the state of Virginia.
History
The Grand Lodge of Virginia was formally established on October 30, 1778, when nine chartered lodges came together to form this central governing body. The creation of the Grand Lodge was necessary to unify and legitimize Masonic activities in Virginia under one authority, given that lodges previously held charters from various Grand Lodges in England, Scotland, and Ireland[2][3].
Prior to its establishment, Freemasonry had already been active in Virginia for several generations, with early records indicating Masonic activity prior to the 1700s. The first steps toward forming a unified Grand Lodge began in May 1777, with a convention held to discuss the need for a central authority[3][4].
Leadership and Notable Members
The first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Virginia was John Blair, Jr., a past master of Williamsburg Lodge No. 6. He was installed on October 13, 1778. George Washington, who was also a Virginia Mason, was initially approached for the position but declined due to his military responsibilities and the fact that he had never held a leadership role within a lodge[4].
The organization has had a long history of involvement with influential figures, including several U.S. presidents such as George Washington and James Monroe[2][4].
Mission and Structure
The mission of the Grand Lodge of Virginia is to promote the principles of Freemasonry, which include Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. It seeks to enhance and strengthen the character of individual members while fostering a community of men who are devoted to their families, faiths, countries, and fraternity. The organization consists of over 300 Masonic Lodges across Virginia, with a membership of over 33,000[2].
The Grand Lodge supports local lodges in their charitable efforts and educational programs, emphasizing the development of integrity, character, and leadership among its members. Its headquarters, initially located in Williamsburg, was moved to Richmond in 1784, where it remains today[2][4].
Historical Significance
The Grand Lodge of Virginia is significant not only for its role in Virginia's Masonic history but also as a part of American Masonic heritage. It represents one of the earliest attempts to organize and unify Freemasonry under a single governing body in what is now the United States.
In 1865, part of its jurisdiction was separated to form the Grand Lodge of West Virginia, following West Virginia's secession from Virginia during the American Civil War[4].
Modern Activities
Today, the Grand Lodge of Virginia continues to play an active role in Virginia's communities through its emphasis on fellowship, charity, education, and leadership development. It supports local lodges in various social and charitable endeavors, while maintaining the traditional values and practices of Freemasonry.
