Young men see the possibilities—that’s where it starts. Sixteen high school students from Schenectady City School District took a significant step toward their futures on March 20-21, visiting the University of Vermont (UVM) to explore the Young Men of Talent (YMT) program. Developed by CFES Brilliant Pathways, YMT is designed to support Black and Latino male students who face disproportionate barriers to college enrollment and completion. The need is urgent—Black and Latino males are three times less likely to earn a college degree than their white, upper-middle-class peers. “These young men have the ability and drive to succeed but often lack the necessary support and guidance,” said CFES President Rick Dalton. “Young Men of Talent is there for them—from the moment they consider college to the day they graduate.” Now in its second year, YMT provides mentorship, career counseling, and exposure to higher education and career pathways. For many students, this trip was a game-changer. “Before this experience, they may not have considered their future paths,” said district counselor Ken Mayfield. “Now, they’re starting to see what’s possible.” Schenectady’s engagement with YMT is just the beginning of what Dalton envisions as a national movement to break down barriers that hold young men back. “Early exposure to college and careers is critical. By introducing mentorship and real-world experiences early on, we’re paving a pathway to success.” Read more at: https://brilliantpathways.org/schenectady-students-explore-higher-education-opportunities-at-the-university-of-vermont-as-young-men-of-talent-scholars/ (fb)
