On a recent spring day, 10th and 11th grade CFES Scholars from Willsboro CSD ventured out on the University of Vermont’s research vessel, The Marcelle Melosira, to participate in a Lake Champlain Sea Granteducation program for students and teachers throughout the Lake Champlain basin. While on the Lake Champlain “floating classroom,” the Scholars, hosted by the Watershed Alliance, gathered samples and learned skills such as how to identify a variety of plankton under a microscope and how to measure water turbidity. They also learned about the Lake Champlain watershed, the concerns about its health, and the steps being taken to maintain the beautiful watershed that they call home. “This exciting field trip gave students valuable insight into what college level research is like, and gave them exposure to several different career pathways in the field of environmental science,” said Neely Fortune, College and Career Readiness Advisor for the CFES Brilliant Pathways GEAR UP program.
