American Liver Foundation
Overview
The American Liver Foundation (ALF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting liver health and disease prevention. Established in 1976 by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), ALF aims to facilitate education, advocacy, support services, and research for the prevention, treatment, and cure of liver disease.
Mission and Values
The ALF's mission is centered around improving the lives of those affected by liver disease by providing comprehensive resources and support. Their core values emphasize leadership, innovation, accountability, inclusiveness, and a commitment to advancing liver health globally.
History
Prior to its founding, there was no national voluntary health agency focused exclusively on combating liver diseases. The establishment of ALF marked a significant step towards addressing this gap, complementing the work of AASLD. Today, ALF continues to play a vital role in raising awareness and supporting research into liver diseases.
Education and Awareness
ALF implements a wide range of educational programs aimed at both the public and healthcare professionals. These efforts focus on maintaining liver health and preventing liver disease, highlighting that many liver diseases are preventable if detected early.
Research and Funding
Since 1979, ALF's Research Awards Program has provided substantial funding for liver disease research, totaling over $28 million. This program has supported the careers of more than 890 scientists and physicians, contributing significantly to advancements in liver disease treatment and research.
Organizational Structure
ALF operates with a dedicated staff and national board of directors, ensuring that its mission is fulfilled effectively across the U.S. The organization has multiple divisions nationwide, furthering its reach and impact.
Impact
By supporting medical research, educating medical professionals, advocating for patient rights, and creating public awareness campaigns, ALF makes a measurable difference in the fight against liver disease. It remains a key voice for the millions of Americans affected by liver conditions.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month. There are over 100 types of liver disease. Alcohol associated liver disease is one of them. Excess alcohol consumption can cause alcohol associated fatty liver disease (now called metabolic alcohol associated liver disease). Excessive alcohol intake is more than two alcoholic drinks per day for men, and one alcoholic drink for women per day. Extra fat builds up in the liver cells. Most “heavy drinkers” develop this condition. It usually reverses if a person stops drinking alcohol. https://liver.fyi/AALD (fb)
