Come celebrate Rachel Carson Day at Radnor Lake on May 27 from 10am-1pm at the Barbara J. Mapp Aviary Education Center! In 1962, Rachel Carson book Silent Spring was released and helped shaped the mindset of our current day environmental professionals across the world. To commemorate this special day, park visitors can hike up to the Barbara J. Mapp Aviary Education center for a self-guided tour/interpretive program to view our captive birds of prey along the 550’ boardwalk. Visitors can also spend time in the Ann Tarbell Library and inside the education center viewing our captive snakes and turtles during their visit. To learn more about Rachel Carson and her impact in reshaping thinking on the use of pesticides relative to the environment, please visit the following link: www.rachelcarson.org/biography For more info on this event: https://tnstateparks.com/parks/event_details/radnor-lake/#/?event=rachel-carson-day-2024-at-radnor-lake (fb)

Otter Creek Road Repairs Begin June 2 Radnor Lake will soon undertake state-funded repairs to Otter Creek Road, addressing damage from the 2010 floods and improving accessibility and wheelchair usage with the addition of new guardrails. Preparation work starts Monday, May 19, when construction crews will restripe the west parking area by the visitor center, install silt fencing along Otter Creek Road, and begin moving equipment onto the site. Starting June 2, parking will be unavailable on Otter Creek Road on the hill approaching the lake. Parking on the dam will also be closed during this time. ADA parking will still be provided in the west parking area and Radnor Lake's automated wheelchair program will remain available. During construction, jogging, dog walking and bicycling will be limited to the short sections from the parking areas to the closed interior portion of Otter Creek Road. Map indicates closed section. Hikers will be able to circle the lake utilizing South Lake Trail instead of Otter Creek Road. The project is expected to be finished in October 2025. The start of the project was delayed to ensure there was no disruption to nesting eagles on the lake. The park consulted with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Tennessee Division of Natural Areas and Tennessee State Parks on maintaining protection guidelines for the eagle nest.
