Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) is a nonprofit veterans service organization in the United States, founded in 1899 by veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. It is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, and has more than 1.4 million members, including its Auxiliary.
History
The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when local organizations were formed by veterans returning from foreign conflicts. These veterans were often wounded or sick and found little support upon their return. The first societies were established in Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania. By 1913, these groups merged to form the national organization known today as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
Mission and Activities
The VFW's mission is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts, serve veterans, the military, and communities, and advocate for veterans' rights. The organization has played a significant role in shaping veterans' legislation, including the establishment of the Veterans Administration and the development of the national cemetery system. Notably, the VFW was instrumental in the passage of the G.I. Bill of 1944 and its modern updates, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Advocacy Efforts
The VFW has been at the forefront of several major advocacy efforts. It has fought for compensation for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange and for those diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. Additionally, the VFW has supported legislation like the Veterans Access and Accountability Act of 2014 and the Honoring Our PACT Act of 2022. It has also contributed to the construction of numerous veterans memorials across the United States.
Community Service
Beyond advocacy, the VFW and its Auxiliary engage in extensive community service. Members contribute millions of volunteer hours annually, participating in programs such as Make A Difference Day. The organization also offers scholarships to support education for military families and veterans.
Financial Information
The VFW operates as a nonprofit organization. Details about its financial operations, including taxpayer identification number (EIN), are filed as required by law for tax-exempt organizations in the United States.
