Grafton Cornet Band
The Grafton Cornet Band is a historically significant community band based in Grafton, Vermont, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2017. It is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 02-0558271[2][5].
History and Formation
The band was formed in March 1867 by Francis Phelps, who gathered local musicians at the home of Vestus Wilbur to discuss the establishment of a band for the town. Solomon F. Merrill, a talented musician from Keene, New Hampshire, was invited to be the band's first musical director[1].
Early Years and Activities
Initially, the band featured cornets and drums. It participated in the first Decoration Day, the precursor to Memorial Day, held on May 30, 1868, and has continued to perform at every Memorial Day service since then. In the early years, Francis Phelps drove a bandwagon pulled by horses as the band members played while traveling between towns[1].
Evolution and Contributions
By 1885, a bandstand was built at the corner of Townshend Road and Main Street for concerts. Over time, the bandstand underwent replacements and was eventually discontinued. Today, the band performs primarily at the Grafton Public Library and the White Church. The band began including a variety of instruments beyond just cornets and has been notable for its long-standing dedication from members, including some who have played for over 60 years[1].
Mission and Impact
The Grafton Cornet Band plays a pivotal role in preserving cultural heritage and fostering community engagement through music. It welcomes members from a wide range of ages, from teenagers to octogenarians, and spans both Vermont and New Hampshire residents. The organization is centered around enriching local cultural life and contributing to the rich musical tradition of the region[4].
Legacy and Milestones
In recent years, the band celebrated its 150th anniversary with a free concert and historical exhibitions showcasing the band's history. Members such as Charles L. Park and Bruce Corwin have been highly influential, with Park directing the band for 40 years and Corwin for 42 years[1]. The band's longevity and dedication reflect its importance to the community and its role in preserving historic musical traditions.
