PROMOTE THE ART OF SINGING IN HARMONY

Sweet Adelines International

Sweet Adelines International is a nonprofit music education association dedicated to promoting the art form of barbershop harmony and a cappella singing among women. Established in 1945 by Edna Mae Anderson in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the organization has grown to become one of the largest singing organizations for women globally.

Background

Sweet Adelines was founded by Anderson as a response to women wanting to participate in the barbershop harmony style that was popularized by their husbands, members of the Barbershop Harmony Society (formerly SPEBSQSA). The first chapter was formed with 85 members and named Atomaton, reflecting the Atomic Age. The organization expanded internationally in 1953 when its first chapter outside the U.S. was chartered in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. The name officially changed to Sweet Adelines International in May 1991 to reflect its global presence.

Mission and Impact

The mission of Sweet Adelines International is to educate its members in vocal music, particularly barbershop harmony, and to promote this musical style through performances and competitions. The organization emphasizes the value of sisterhood and harmony (both musically and socially) among its members. It provides various educational opportunities, including training in vocal production, directing, and performance skills.

Competitions

Sweet Adelines International hosts annual competitions for women's barbershop quartets and choruses. These events have been held since 1947 and have grown into a global phenomenon, attracting thousands of participants each year. The competitions include categories such as the international championships for both quartets and choruses, as well as special competitions like the "Harmony Classic" for smaller choruses and the "Rising Star" for young singers.

Diversity and Reach

Sweet Adelines International boasts a diverse membership spanning multiple continents. Its members include women from various backgrounds who share a passion for singing. The organization supports over 500 choruses and more than 1,200 registered quartets worldwide.

Awards and Recognition

Winners of the top-10 places in the international competitions are awarded medals and recognized as champions for the year. International quartet champions are also awarded a tiara or crown and are known as "Queens of Harmony." The organization recognizes excellence in directing through titles such as "Master Director."

Education and Community

Education is a core aspect of Sweet Adelines International, with programs aimed at developing vocal and performance skills. The organization also engages in community performances, raising awareness and appreciation for barbershop harmony. It offers grants and scholarships to encourage the development of musical talent.

Tax Status

Sweet Adelines International is recognized as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to the organization and its affiliated choruses are tax-deductible. While primarily focused on barbershop harmony, Sweet Adelines International may participate in or donate to other qualified nonprofit organizations, ensuring compliance with IRS regulations.
