New York Public Radio's roots trace back to WNYC, which first broadcast on July 8, 1924, as "the voice of New York." Initially owned by the City of New York, WNYC was managed for "Instruction, Enlightenment, and Entertainment" until its sale in 1995. The WNYC Foundation, established by private citizens, purchased the radio licenses from the city, transitioning the stations into an independent nonprofit organization.

Operations

New York Public Radio encompasses several flagship stations, including WNYC AM 820 and WNYC FM 93.9. These stations are among the most listened-to public radio stations in the nation, hosting a wide range of programs. WNYC FM 93.9 focuses on news, culture, and classical music, while WNYC AM 820 primarily covers breaking news and international issues.

Notable shows include The Brian Lehrer Show and The Leonard Lopate Show, as well as national programs like Radio Lab and On The Media.
