From Almost Homeowners to Homeless… Then Hope Restored Monique and Donald were on the path to homeownership, paying rent in what they believed was a rent-to-own agreement. But then came the devastating news—the person they’d been paying didn’t actually own the house. It had been sold by the city. Suddenly, this family—Monique, Donald, their daughter, and her four children—found themselves without a place to call home. With heavy hearts, they made the difficult decision to move into a shelter. “We didn’t want to come, honestly. You hear the stigma about shelters,” Monique shared. “But it wasn’t really like that. Everybody was so pleasant. It was a blessing.” Thanks to The Detroit Rescue Mission, Monique and her family found not just shelter, but dignity, kindness, and a path forward to find affordable housing. 🙏 This is why we do what we do.
