As the days shorten and the warmth of summer gives way to the cooling breezes of late August, the month of Elul arrives once more, announcing the approach of a new Jewish year – 5786 – in all its magnificence. Like a sports preseason, a theater dress rehearsal, or debate prep before an election, Elul carries customs and traditions that prepare us physically, emotionally, and spiritually for the awe of the High Holy Days ahead.

Shabbat Message from Rabbi Joshua Greenbaum: As someone with deeps roots in education, I’ve always found an intrinsic connection between the starts of the new school year and the new Jewish year. It’s seemingly no coincidence that the “People of the Book” renew and recommit ourselves annually at the very same time that students’ renew and recommit their academic pursuits. Both cyclical traditions occur simultaneously, sharing the intention to make us better through study – one through an academic lens, the other, spiritual.
