Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York

The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York, often simply referred to as the Grand Lodge of New York, is a leading nonprofit organization in the state of New York. Founded in 1782, it serves as the coordinating body for Masonic activities throughout the state.

History

The earliest documented presence of Freemasonry in New York dates back to the mid-1730s. At that time, Daniel Coxe Jr. was appointed as Provincial Grand Master for New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania by the Premier Grand Lodge of England. However, there is no primary source evidence of his active tenure[1][2]. Over the years, other Provincial Grand Masters were appointed, including Francis Goelet, George Harrison, and Sir John Johnson[1].

The Grand Lodge of New York was formally organized on December 15, 1782, under a Provincial Grand Warrant from the Antient Grand Lodge of England, dated September 5, 1781[1][2]. It declared its independence on June 6, 1787, and adopted the title "Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York"[1][2]. Robert R. Livingston, a prominent figure in early American history, served as Grand Master for sixteen years[2].

Philanthropy and Contribution

The Grand Lodge of New York has played a significant role in philanthropic endeavors and public service. Its members have contributed as governors, senators, judges, doctors, lawyers, and teachers, impacting both state and national welfare[2]. The organization has also been involved in various charitable activities and historical preservation projects.

Modern Activities

In recent years, the Grand Lodge of New York has maintained strong ties with other Masonic organizations, including mutual recognition with the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New York since 2001[1]. It continues to support Masonic youth groups like the Organization of Triangles, Inc., founded in New York in 1925[1]. Additionally, the Grand Lodge operates several significant institutions, including the Masonic Medical Research Institute and the Masonic Care Community of New York[1].

Leadership

The current Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of New York is Steven Adam Rubin[1]. Over the years, the organization has seen numerous past Grand Masters who have contributed to its growth and influence.

Buildings and Heritage

Historically, the Grand Lodge operated from various buildings in New York City. The current Grand Lodge building, located at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue, was built in 1909 and continues to serve as its headquarters[1]. The Chancellor Robert R Livingston Masonic Library in New York offers a wealth of historical materials related to Freemasonry in the state[1][3].
