We're 155 years old today!🍾 🎉 We honor our history & credit our formation to Bvt. BG Robert Anderson (1825) who believed that an “Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy” was important. Anderson wrote Bvt. BG Sylvanus Thayer (1808) in 1869 outlining the concept of forming an association “to see what should be done to perfect and perpetuate this truly national institution.” Thayer agreed & on May 22, 1869, 15 grads gathered in the President of CCNY Dr. Horace Webster's (1818) office & resolved that the Association was to be “formed purely for the promotion of social and fraternal intercourse.” 155 years later WPAOG holds true to those original ideals, providing opportunities for grads to gather in Societies, during reunions, & on Founders Day around the world, strengthens the bonds of the #LongGrayLine through communications & services, & prepares for the future by supporting cadets and #WestPoint. WPAOG honored six exceptional alumni with the Distinguished Graduate Award (DGA) during a ceremony at the United States Military Academy. This prestigious award, funded by an endowment from E. Douglas Kenna ’45 and his wife, Jean, recognizes graduates whose character, distinguished service, and stature exemplify the ideals of West Point's motto: "Duty, Honor, Country." Congrats to the 2025 honorees: LTG (R) David H. Ohle ’68: A decorated Vietnam veteran, Ohle served as the Army’s deputy chief of staff for personnel and contributed significantly to modernizing Army leadership systems. LTC (R) Clyde A. (Pete) Selleck III ’77: After a military career, Selleck led Michelin North America and supported the Army by ensuring the provision of combat-grade tires for MRAP vehicles. He has been a steadfast supporter of West Point admissions and alumni initiatives. LTG (R) David D. Halverson ’79: With 37 years in uniform, Halverson commanded at every echelon and played a pivotal role in Army infrastructure and ethics programs, while also actively supporting West Point societies and conferences. GEN (R) Joseph L. Votel ’80: Votel's 39-year military career included leading U.S. Special Operations Command and U.S. Central Command, with significant contributions to counterterrorism and military strategy. Kathy Medaris Widmer ’83: A trailblazer for women at West Point, Widmer became a leader in the pharmaceutical industry and chaired the Wounded Warrior Project, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to service and mentorship. SEC Mark T. Esper ’86: Esper served as the 23rd Secretary of the Army and the 27th Secretary of Defense, implementing significant reforms and modernization efforts within the Department of Defense. The ceremony celebrated these individuals' remarkable contributions to the nation and their embodiment of West Point's enduring values. Their achievements continue to inspire the Long Gray Line and future generations of leaders.
