First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of the USA (FCSLA)

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of the USA (FCSLA), also known as FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1892. The organization was founded by Anna Hurban and a group of Slovak immigrant women, motivated by the need for financial and social support in their communities. Initially named the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Union, it was created to provide death and injury benefits to members and their families.

History

The inception of FCSLA can be traced back to January 1, 1892, when Hurban gathered eight other Slovak women at St. Ladislaus Church to form a society dedicated to supporting one another. By the end of that year, the organization grew from 9 members to 95, significantly increasing its assets. Throughout its early years, FCSLA organized community events, established bylaws, and chose St. Ann as its patroness.

In the following decades, the association expanded rapidly. By 1927, membership swelled to about 8,000, leading to significant celebrations including a large parade in Cleveland. The Great Depression challenged the organization, but it adapted by offering financial waivers to struggling families. The leadership of influential figures like Frances Jakabcin and Helen Kocan during these years helped stabilize the organization and foster growth.

In the 1960s, the name was officially changed to the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association to distinguish itself from other organizations using 'union' in their titles. This period also saw several mergers with other Slovak benefit organizations.

Modern Era and Mission

Today, FCSLA Life serves over 107,000 members across the United States and promotes financial security grounded in Catholic values and Slovak heritage. It operates approximately 500 branches, engaging in various community support initiatives and cultural preservation activities.

The organization's growth has been notable; as of 2021, FCSLA Life achieved an A- (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best, indicating its financial strength and stability. It has diversified its offerings to include life insurance and annuities while continuing to support charitable endeavors through scholarship programs and community service projects.

Community Engagement and Cultural Heritage

FCSLA Life emphasizes the importance of community involvement and cultural heritage. It has initiated various programs to engage younger members while maintaining its traditional values. Notable initiatives include the Anna Hurban Scholarship program, which has awarded over $3.3 million to assist students, and national appeals for charitable causes that reflect the organization’s commitment to service.

The association celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017, highlighting its long-standing dedication to the Slovak community and the support it provides to its members. Celebratory events included Mass at the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist and a gala banquet, underscoring the organization’s role in fostering community and faith.

As of early 2025, FCSLA Life is led by National President Cynthia M. Maleski, who announced her retirement after an impactful tenure. Under her leadership, the organization has seen unprecedented growth in membership and assets, solidifying its position as a premier fraternal society in the United States.
