From the Desk of Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz ‘Did You Know’ May 22, 2025 RANGE SAFETY Last week we discussed fundamental rules when handling a firearm. One necessary action you must take when owning a firearm is sighting in the weapon. Using a public range is a great place but there are safety rules you and others need to follow. First off you must follow all of the rules for the shooting range you are at. Most ranges have ammunition and weapon policies. Follow all the fundamental rules we discussed in our last segment. If the range supplies an instructor, listen to what they say. When you arrive go directly to the range office. Most ranges do now allow you to enter the building or range with a loaded gun. Checking in will allow the range master or staff to check and see if your weapon and ammunition is an approved and safe weapon to use at their range. If they do allow you to bring in a loaded weapon, always go to the shooting line in front of the safety line to load and unload. NEVER handle loaded weapons behind others that are shooting. When you are at the shooting line, always keep the barrel pointed down range. Wearing hearing and eye protection in mandatory at most ranges. It is a safe practice to use eye protection every time you shoot in case of ricochets. Hearing protection will also protect a loss of hearing in the future. It is a great practice to keep your firearm on safe until you intend to shoot. If you see anyone not following the basic fundamental and range safely rules, report it immediately or leave the range. Not following the rules and negligent discharges of a firearm is life threatening. In the next and final series we will discuss firearm etiquette. ST. LANDRY CRIME STOPPERS TIP OF THE WEEK 5-22-25 BROUGHT TO YOU BY ACADIAN TOTAL SECURITY AS YOU WALK, OBSERVE THOSE AROUND YOU. NOTICE IF THERE ARE ANY STRANGERS SITTING IN PARKED CARS WATCHING YOU OR STANDING IN YOUR PATHWAY. IF SO, CHOOSE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE AND BY ALL MEANS, AVOID THEM. Use common sense and don't be a victim! If you see something - say something. Keep an eye on your neighbor's properties and report ANY suspicious activity to law enforcement. Be alert, be safe and God bless. (fb)
