Home - Spencertown Academy Building Community Through the Arts Gees Bend The Next GenerationComing to Spencertown this SummerJuly 11August 3 2025 The Spencertown Academy in collaboration with the Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy is pleased to announce an exhibition of the famous Gees Bend quilts along with talks workshops and demonstrations by the quilters. There will be a special appearance by Willie Joe Pettway son of legacy quilter Lola Pettway who will exhibit and discuss his late mothers quilts. The small community of Gees Bend Alabama has been creating their extraordinary quilts since the 1800s. Hailed by the New York Times as some of the most miraculous works of Modern Art America has produced these quilts constitute a crucial chapter in American art.
