Formed by Advanced Energy in 2003, NC GreenPower is a nonprofit whose mission is to expand public knowledge and acceptance of cleaner energy technologies to all North Carolinians through local, community-based initiatives. In 2015, NC GreenPower launched a pilot program to support solar PV installations at K-12 schools, and this pilot was approved as a program by the North Carolina Utilities Commission in 2019. All supported projects are located in North Carolina. Contributions to NC GreenPower are tax-deductible.

Its located about 20 minutes north of Pilot Mountain State Park and is less than 7 miles from the Virginia state line. With their mission HandsOn MindsOn and more than 400 students it was the first school to finish a 5 kW solar PV installation with the help of our NC GreenPower Solar Schools grant program.

There's still time to apply for the NC GreenPower Solar+ Schools grant. Any public NC K-12 school in a Tier 1 or 2 county can apply to be considered for this opportunity. Selected schools will receive a fully-funded 20-kW rooftop solar array and nearly $8,000 in related benefits: STEM lessons, a hands-on activity kit, and a 6-hour certified teacher training.
