Last Saturday was International Vulture Awareness Day. We’ve said time and time again how critical our vulture populations are for healthy ecosystems and disease control, but here are some fun facts about vultures that you may not know. We started our Bird of the Week series for the summer with the Anhinga, and we end the series with another tropical visitor to Colorado, the Wood Stork. Wood Storks are typically found in Central & South America, as well as Florida, with some populations occasionally found in California, Mexico, Georgia, and South Carolina. The order these birds belong to (Order Ciconiiformes) is composed solely of storks, but other birds such as herons, ibises, and spoonbills were previously grouped together with storks.
