Today, we honor the late Dottie Frazier, a true pioneer in the diving world and a member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame (WDHOF). Standing at just five feet tall, Dottie’s legacy towers over the diving community, breaking barriers and setting records throughout her adventurous life. Dottie’s story is as inspiring as it is unique. From ocean swimming and boating in the 1920s to becoming the world’s first certified female scuba instructor in 1955, she continually defied expectations. In the 1940s, she contributed to the war effort as a 'Rosie the Riveter' and supported her family as a commercial fisher. Her passion led her to become a hard-hat diver and the first female dive shop owner and wetsuit manufacturer. Her autobiography is a testament to her unyielding spirit and pioneering achievements. In 2019, at the age of 97, Dottie was honored with the Historical Diving Society Diving Pioneer Award, cementing her legacy as a trailblazer. Her expertise has earned her prestigious accolades, including the NOGI Award (Arts) in 1987 and the DEMA Reaching Out Award in 2000. She was inducted into the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame in 2007, a testament to her incredible impact on the diving community. Her captivating coffee table book, My Underwater Photo Journey, published in 2004, takes readers on a visual adventure from the Caribbean to the South Pacific. This delightful collection showcases her whimsical artistry, balanced by her scientific knowledge.
