Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York

The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York, also known as the Grand Lodge of New York, is a nonprofit organization and the largest independent Masonic body in New York. Founded in 1781, it traces its lineage back to early Freemasonry in England.

History

The first documented presence of Freemasonry in New York dates back to the mid-1730s with the appointment of Daniel Coxe Jr. as Provincial Grand Master for the provinces of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania by the Premier Grand Lodge of England. However, his tenure remains largely undocumented and thus uncertain.

In the 1750s, both the Premier Grand Lodge and the Antient Grand Lodge of England chartered lodges in New York. The Antient Grand Lodge's charter formed the basis for the creation of the Grand Lodge of New York. Officially organized on December 15, 1782, the Grand Lodge declared its independence and adopted its modern title on June 6, 1787[1][2].

Structure and Developments

The Grand Lodge serves as the coordinating body for Masonic functions throughout New York State. Over the years, it has maintained various headquarters in New York City, including a notable Gothic-style Masonic Hall built in 1826 and a Second French Empire Style building erected in the 1870s. The current headquarters is located at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue, built in 1909[1].

Notable Members and Affiliations

Several prominent individuals have been associated with the Grand Lodge of New York, including influential figures from historical and contemporary eras. The organization has also fostered relationships with other Masonic bodies, such as the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New York, with whom it has had mutual recognition since 2001[1].

Community and Cultural Impact

The Grand Lodge of New York plays a significant role in preserving Masonic heritage through its library and historical artifacts. It also supports various charitable initiatives and Masonic youth groups, emphasizing brotherhood and mutual assistance[3][5].
