MCCNJ originated as a grassroots initiative to support mothers in the region. In June 1980, in association with the Westfield Y, the organization began offering daytime groups and childcare services, which significantly increased its membership. The center was incorporated in 1984, and its operations expanded further in 1985 with the introduction of an on-site babysitting program, supported by a $10,000 grant. This year also marked the beginning of a semi-annual consignment sale of children's items, which served as a major fundraiser for the organization.
