The Lake Hopatcong Historical Society is a U.S. nonprofit organization focused on preserving and promoting the rich history of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest lake. Established in 1955, the society has grown to become one of the largest historical groups in New Jersey, with over 750 members.

The idea for the society was conceived in the spring of 1955, following an article that sparked interest in preserving the area's history. The first organizational meeting was held on August 10, 1955. Initially, dues were set at $2 per year, and life membership was $20. Over time, the society has evolved significantly, playing a crucial role in documenting and showcasing the region's past.
Museum and Collections
The society operates the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum, housed in the former lock tender's house on the Morris Canal. The museum offers an insightful look into the history of Lake Hopatcong, featuring exhibits on the Lenape Native American settlements, the Morris Canal, and the era when Lake Hopatcong was a major northeastern resort. The museum's collections include artifacts and memorabilia from notable figures associated with the lake, such as Bette Cooper and Lotta Crabtree.
