Kappa Delta Sorority

Overview

Kappa Delta Sorority, commonly known as Kappa Delta or KD, is a national social sorority founded on October 23, 1897, at the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University) in Farmville, Virginia. It was the first sorority established at this institution and is one of the "Farmville Four," which includes Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Zeta Tau Alpha. Kappa Delta is affiliated with the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), a governing body for 26 national social sororities.

Founders

The sorority was founded by four ambitious women:

  • Lenora Ashmore Blackiston
  • Mary Sommerville Sparks Hendrick
  • Julia Gardiner Tyler Wilson
  • Sara Turner White These founders initiated a movement that would grow into a large network of women supporting each other and making significant contributions to their communities.

Philanthropy

Kappa Delta is deeply committed to philanthropic efforts. Its official philanthropic organizations include the Girl Scouts of the USA and Prevent Child Abuse America. Historically, Kappa Delta has also supported the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU and Orthopedic Research Awards. The sorority's members engage in various community service activities, such as mentoring and volunteering with Girl Scouts and hosting events like "Shamrock" to raise funds for child abuse prevention.

Symbols and Traditions

The symbols of Kappa Delta include the nautilus shell and dagger, with the teddy bear and katydid as mascots. The official colors are olive green and pearl white, and the official flower is the white rose. The jewels associated with Kappa Delta are the diamond, emerald, and pearl. The organization's open motto is "Ta Kala Diokomen," meaning "Let us strive for that which is honorable, beautiful, and highest."

Structure and Membership

Kappa Delta boasts a significant presence with over 274,000 initiated members and more than 168 active collegiate chapters across North America. It also has extensive alumnae networks with more than 200 chapters. The organization operates under the leadership of an elected National Council and hundreds of volunteers, promoting values of friendship, integrity, lifelong learning, and selfless service.

Mission and Impact

The mission of Kappa Delta is to provide experiences that build confidence in women and inspire them to action through lifelong friendships. The organization encourages its members to excel academically and professionally, develop leadership skills, and become responsible citizens. Kappa Delta supports its altruistic goals through the Kappa Delta Foundation, which provides scholarships, educational opportunities, and funding for local community outreach programs.

Events and Programs

Kappa Delta hosts various events and programs aimed at fostering sisterhood and personal growth. These include its biennial national conventions, where members come together to discuss strategic plans and celebrate achievements. The sorority also offers opportunities for international travel through its "Ever Loyal Adventures," designed to deepen bonds of sisterhood while exploring new destinations.
