The Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas), despite its name, is not a super common intake at our wildlife center! We get several each year, but it's rare that we have more than one at a time. What's even more rare? Having a mature male AND female at the same time, giving us the perfect opportunity to show off their amazing sexual dimorphism! 😍 Despite having different appearances, these two are the same species. The male is sporting his signature white-ringed black mask, and both have a lemon-yellow throat and chest. These two are both fully grown at a whopping 9 grams per bird. Hold two quarters in your palm--that's still 2g heavier than this animal! The female came in after hitting a window, while the male was miraculously spotted in the middle of the road by one of our staff! According to the staff member, this little bird looked like a leaf at first, but something told them to turn around and check... And sure enough, it was this tiny and VERY lucky warbler!
