Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute (OTRADI)
Overview

The Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute (OTRADI) is a nonprofit organization established to bridge the gap between scientific research and commercialization. Founded in 2007, OTRADI focuses on transforming research from Oregon's research laboratories into viable commercial ventures, particularly in the bioscience sector.

Mission

OTRADI's mission is to facilitate the translation of scientific research into industry. This involves advancing bioscience commercialization, product development, and incubating startup businesses to bring innovative health and wellness products to market.

Operations and Impact

OTRADI operates the Oregon Bioscience Incubator (OBI), a unique facility that offers a comprehensive environment for bioscience startups. Located on Portland's South Waterfront, OBI provides entrepreneurs and scientists with access to state-of-the-art facilities, shared equipment, meeting spaces, and entrepreneurial mentoring. This infrastructure supports the development of drugs, therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices, wearables, consumer health products, and digital health IT solutions.

Funding and Partnerships

OTRADI receives funding in part from the Oregon State Lottery and is administered by the Oregon Business Development Department. It is recognized as one of the Signature Research Centers by Business Oregon, a designation that acknowledges its role in supporting high-growth sectors in Oregon.

Leadership and Initiatives

OTRADI is led by a team with diverse backgrounds and expertise in business, science, and entrepreneurship. The organization also engages Entrepreneurs-in-Residence who offer coaching and strategic guidance to emerging bioscience companies. This approach helps foster business development, financing strategies, and strategic partnerships within Oregon's bioscience community.

Impact on Oregon's Bioscience Sector

By providing a platform for innovative bioscience research to become commercially viable products, OTRADI plays a crucial role in advancing Oregon's bioscience sector. The incubator supports numerous startups, facilitating job creation and contributing to economic growth in the region.
