Overview
MilSpeak Foundation Inc. is a 501(c)3 public charitable organization dedicated to supporting, promoting, and celebrating the creative arts endeavors of military servicemembers, veterans, families, and caregivers. Founded by retired Marine Corps veteran Sally Parmer, the organization aims to provide a platform for military members to express themselves creatively, fostering a community that bridges the military with the arts.
History
MilSpeak Foundation originated from the MilSpeak Creative Writing Seminars (MCWS), which were first held in August 2005 at Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, South Carolina. Initially, the seminars were led by Sally Parmer, who recognized the healing benefits of writing during her pursuit of an MFA from Queens University of Charlotte. Over time, MCWS evolved into MilSpeak Foundation, which was incorporated in South Carolina and recognized as a tax-exempt organization by the IRS in June 2010.
Programs and Initiatives
- Workshops and Seminars: MilSpeak offers both on-site and online creative writing workshops that cater to the military community. These workshops are designed to tap into the healing power of writing and other arts.
- Publishing Platforms: The foundation operates publishing arms such as MilSpeak Books and Family of Light, which provide opportunities for military members and their families to publish their literary works.
- Resource Advocacy: MilSpeak advocates for documenting and preserving military history, raising public awareness about the cross-generational impact of military experience, and highlighting the wellness benefits linked to arts-related activities.
Leadership
As of 2017, leadership of MilSpeak Foundation was transitioned to Tracy Crow, a former Marine Corps officer with extensive experience in leadership and creative writing. Under her leadership, the foundation has expanded its services to include online workshops and has absorbed On Point Seminars & Workshops as a training division. Tracy's vision aligns with Sally Parmer's founding mission of utilizing the arts for healing within the military community.
Mission
At its core, MilSpeak Foundation seeks to empower individuals associated with the military to explore their creative potential. By fostering a supportive community and providing resources for artistic expression, the organization aims to promote wellness and personal growth among its participants.
