Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System
The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System is a governing body responsible for overseeing the University of Wisconsin System. The board is composed of 18 members, with 16 appointed by the Governor of Wisconsin and subject to confirmation by the Senate. Of these 16 members, 14 serve staggered seven-year terms, and two are UW System students serving two-year terms. One of the two student regents is a non-traditional student. The board also includes two ex officio members: the state superintendent of public instruction and the president or a designee of the Wisconsin Technical College System Board[1][2].
Responsibilities
The Board of Regents is responsible for establishing policies and rules governing the University of Wisconsin System. Key responsibilities include:
- Strategic Planning: Conducting planning to meet future state needs for collegiate education.
- Admission Standards: Setting admission standards and policies.
- Budget Review and Approval: Reviewing and approving university budgets.
- Regulatory Framework: Establishing the regulatory framework that allows individual units to operate with a high degree of autonomy.
- Appointments: The board appoints the President of the University of Wisconsin System, the chancellors of the 13 universities, and grants tenure appointments to faculty members[1][3].
Governance
The Board holds regular meetings eight times per year, with special meetings scheduled as needed. The members serve without pay. The Board President, Vice President, and a full-time Executive Director and Corporate Secretary are elected annually during the Board's June meeting[1].
The Board of Regents plays a crucial role in ensuring the governance and operation of the University of Wisconsin System, aligning its actions with the statutory framework established under Chapter 36 of the Wisconsin State Statutes[2].
