GIRHL is a nonprofit organization that believes that every woman should have quality reproductive healthcare, regardless of socioeconomic status, religious and political beliefs, and geographical location. Its uses research, innovation, and advocacy to transform the quality of reproductive health care of underserved women around the world. GIRHL works with local health care professionals to identify key deficits in health care delivery and implementation. In tandem with these professionals, it researches and develops solutions to these deficits by either improving existing processes or researching new approaches to the problem. Its engineering perspective and methods make it unique among peer organizations. GIRHL's research focuses on understanding the root causes of the deficit or problem as well as the people and communities it impacts. Solutions are developed in a culturally sensitive and involved manner. By supporting healthy women in their own environment, GIRHL is strengthening children, families, and communities. GIRHL is partner with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. Korle Bu is one of the largest hospitals in Africa. In this setting, GIRHL is researching causes of intrauterine growth retardation and stillbirth with its patented Prenabelt. The results of this research will clarify the link between maternal sleep position and these devastating birth outcomes. GIRHL is also working with the Hamlin Fistula Center in Ethiopia to improve surgery for obstetric fistula. Only 50% of repair surgeries are successful. GIRHL's research will improve this success rate, giving back livelihoods to thousands of women. This research has been published in several professional journals.
